Lemon balm, known scientifically as Melissa officinalis, is a non-toxic herb that can be used on dogs, cats, and even horses. As a supplement for your pet, lemon balm has many benefits that may help with several different conditions. Lemon balm contains, amongst other things, volatile oils, tannins, and flavonoids. These elements give the herb several therapeutic effects, including calming and relaxing, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, muscle-relaxing, and pain-relieving effects.
As always, consult your veterinarian and use caution before substituting an herb like lemon balm for your pet’s medicine. Lemon balm used for dogs includes anxiety, seizures, sleep, restlessness, nervousness, irritability, digestion, liver issues, bile, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract disorders and topically, for ringworms, cold sores, to repel mosquitoes and fleas.
